Animated examples part one

Hey there everyone, another new post to give you a sense of pace in the world of artoons. I hope you like this one.

This is the last one of the Dr Phibes examples I am going to show you, mainly because I don’t want to give the game away. But for the colouring I discovered that by selecting all of the black, creating a new layer and then hitting the mask button of the layers palette, I found I could paint the mask out of the scene, leaving just the line colours. In this case it made it easy to replace the green colours if the writer didn’t like it. I have since used this method on the Carter’s column that regular appears on the speech balloon website.

I know you don’t want me to give the game away but this week I am going to show you another example of lighting a dark scene. I picked this one in particular because there is quite a big learning curve with it. At the time I was making too many fussy choices and when I did that I had changes to make that really messed up the day. You would find yourself burning the midnight oil just catching up, stressing out and sleeping funny hours. These days a good 6 hours is a lot easier to achive and still maintain a regular schedule outside and in the business environment. The lighting in this one changes quite a lot and I found it intersting getting to grips what would work and what wouldn’t.

This week I developed the idea of using the “soft Light” layer but put way too much detail in some of the others, you know how it goes, you put loads of work into something and the powers that be want that one changed…so off I went and changed a few things. This time I had all the colours laid out and still missed something. A good organised method of working will impose itself on you, whether you like it or not.

Another posting for you on the Dr Phibes comic strip, during the time I was colouring these I loved experimenting with ways of colouring that would give me more options if they needed to be altered. By now this was becoming an obvious necessity. So on this page I coloured everything flat on one layer and added the lighting and shadows on another layer, making this layer “soft light”. Try it and see. I found a dark blue looks great for shadows when using the layer this way. If any of you have other thoughts, let me know.

Hi there and once again I thought I would show you the process I went through to colour the recent Dr Phibes comic strip. With this one I had a bit of a struggle keeping up with the alterations and amendments to my vision and the writers. But one thing you can expect is that if you need to make changes…don’t take it personal!

I hope you like them

Due to the nature of this role, although it was an unpaid one and I have still to see it in print, I thought it worth showing you the progress of the pages as I developed a working method. At this point it was still a little rough.

You will notice that one of the pages has blue sections on it, this is purely to make selecting those pages a lot easier

Here is another treat for you, I know a few of you like to see these things come together and I have gained permission to show you what I have done…permission is important when putting something in print or on the web that has other peoples involevement, you tend to lose cooperation from them otherwise…

I searched online for a tutorial on lettering, inking and colouring.

It’s only easy when you know the answer…so find out.

Enjoy

Dr Phibes is back, this time they have me working on the colours and it was amazing the learning curve involved. The guys I was in contact with were giving me feedback and altering this and that and by the time I finished the colours I had dropped one project (unpaid by the way) and picked up another…eventually I am told payment will come along (fingers crossed considering the debts you build up just putting this stuff together on bread and water)…and learned so much about organising a major edition like this. Just to give you some idea I have put together the layers as a slideshow. I hope you like the show.
